Bridges of Learning: Teacher Support Visits 2026

The Bridges of Learning project supports teachers to implement the Basic Concepts Programme (BCP) in their classrooms. Following training, BCF facilitators conduct support visits to observe implementation, model lessons, provide feedback and strengthen teachers’ mediation practice.

Evidence of progress

The support visits showed clear evidence of teachers developing their confidence and understanding of the BCP approach.

Teachers demonstrated increasing ability to:

• Use the Concept Teaching Model and its six steps
• Plan and deliver focused conceptual lessons
• Use concrete materials effectively
• Ask more purposeful, mediational questions
• Develop learners' conceptual vocabulary
• Give learners opportunities to apply concepts

Several teachers progressed from needing demonstrations and close guidance to independently delivering structured sessions. Teachers were also increasingly able to use concepts such as size, position, shape, more and less in meaningful classroom activities.

Learners showed positive responses to this approach, with examples of children using conceptual language, applying concepts to their classroom environment and successfully comparing, sequencing and representing objects.

Continued support

The main areas requiring further development are:

• Encouraging learners to explain their thinking in full sentences
• Maintaining a clear focus on one concept
• Consistently following the six-step process
• Strengthening mediational questioning rather than giving answers
• Supporting teachers with lesson planning and preparation

Building sustainable practice

The support visits demonstrate the value of ongoing coaching after teacher training. Through observation, modelling and feedback, teachers are increasingly incorporating BCP principles into their classroom practice.

The aim is not simply to teach concepts, but to develop learners who can think, explain, make relationships and apply what they have learned.
