Northern Cape Project: Master Training - Part 1 (2023)

Monday, January 30, 2023 - 08:00 to Thursday, February 2, 2023 - 16:30

Master Training (MT) for ECD Officials in the Northern Cape

The BCF initiated a preliminary trainer-of-trainers during COVID, however, we will soon start comprehensive face-to-face training for all 14 ECD Officials in the Province.

The training has both a classroom learning component as well as a practical component - see the 'classroom' component of the programme below.

Programme for the Master Trainer:-

Day 1 (30 Jan): Colour

Day 2 (31 Jan): Shape

Day 3 (1 Feb): Size

Day 4 (2 Feb): Practical demonstrations of the above three domains

The officials have mostly been exposed to the BCP during our work with them in the districts over the past 5 years.

However, they will be equipped through the MT to confidently and independently convey the programme to their teachers.

The BCF has already trained approximately 50% of all Grade R teachers in the Province. The District Officials will now be equipped to extend the programme in their districts to those teachers who have not yet been trained.

We expect the MT to run for the duration of the year. The trainers will be expected, as a part of their training, to run practice sessions with teachers from their districts.

Outcomes from MT: (taken from the feedback survey)

  • 100% of the candidate trainers indicated that they were either very motivated or exceptionally motivated to become trainers;
  • 92% of the candidate trainers indicated the training had prepared them very well or exceptionally well to train their teachers;
  • 100% of the candidate trainers indicated that the training had significantly improved their understanding of the BCP.

I have enjoyed the BCP online training. I do think it was of great benefit as I have learned new approaches to help children learn. I also thought that BCP is also very helpful to children with difficulties as it provides them with concrete experience through manipulating the materials and being asked different questions to help them be aware of their way of thinking. Louis was very thorough and delivered the smallest details to help us understand the method. I found that very helpful and it enabled me to use it with my kids who have a difference in age and needs. I also enjoyed attending the training via Zoom as Louis was very efficient in using different features to make the training practical, fun and enjoyable.

ZOOM TRAINING 2 FEEDBACK

I was very happy about my development on this course… often as teachers we do not pay attention to detail, but because of Basic Concepts I was aware of the lack of language use in my class. I am now using a different approach with my learners and being aware of the small details that make a big change in the way I teach and learners learn. Thank you for this eye opening course.

Encourages children to be observant and provides opportunity for building language skills - from basics to more complex.

Public Open Training, Cape Town (2014)

I found all aspects of the course very effective.  I now have a very good understanding of how to teach all the concepts.  I am going to be more specific and detailed when I teach. I need to research and plan my basic concepts lessons ...

I understand now that teaching is not just standing in front of the class, but a discussion/ dialogue with your children.

Metro South Education District: Teacher Training, May 2014

‘All foundation phase educators, esp. Grade R, should attend this workshop. If everyone in the education system uses this BCP model, we should see remarkable improvements in the learners' LIT/NUM over a couple of years.’ (Metro North, 2009)
